Department of Philosophy

Introduction 學系介紹

As the founding department of Chinese Culture University, the Department of Philosophy has pursued progressive ideas on the one hand and kept up a long-lasting cultural tradition on the other hand. It seeks the well-balanced development of Eastern and Western philosophies in the atmosphere of diversity and freedom. The main features of the department are to cultivate mutual communication, and the ability to think independently for the students, helping them to be individuals that will not be manipulated by superficial data, nor replaced by AI.

Teaching Characteristics 教學特色

The word “philosophy” means “love of wisdom” in ancient Greek. Philosophy is the gateway to human knowledge. We guide and help students to grasp both Eastern and Western thoughts, and explore the development of philosophical trends of the 20th century, focusing on aesthetics and providing a gender-friendly learning environment in particular. With the benefits of the diverse departments of the university, students are encouraged to connect professional knowledge of arts, law, business, and sciences with philosophical insights, preparing themselves for the future talents endowed with both theoretical and practical potentiality.

Course Highlights 課程重點

We design a core curriculum including five units known as PEARL which represents the core ability for students to cultivate philosophical knowledge. We develop applied courses such as philosophical counseling, children's philosophy, love philosophy, literary criticism and critical theory.

Future 未來發展

In this era of creativity and diverse knowledge, a single departmental training is no longer sufficient to cope with the future reality of society. Philosophy is, however, a significant window to the connection with other disciplines such as law, communication, sociology, business, literature, history, arts and other disciplines available through double-major departments, double degrees, or cross-field curricula. The various international partner institutions also provide many exchange opportunities. With multiple resources, our graduates will also have multiple employment opportunities in the future, entering the cultural and creative industries, mass communication companies, animation, game and digital productions, or business and commercial fields. In addition to employment, there are quite often some other graduates choosing to enter national university research institutes to pursue advanced.
