Introduction 學系介紹

Our undergraduate department was established in the 1963 and is the only department named as "Historiography." Our aim is to cultivate students with a firm foundation in learning both Chinese and World history, equipped with comprehensive knowledge and practical discipline. With a long and distinguished history of an excellent academic atmosphere, our department has always been renowned for its outstanding faculty members, covering courses on both ancient and modern history from the East to the West, making it remarkable in Taiwan’s historical academic area.
We boast the earliest-established doctoral program in history across Taiwan and are the sole private university in the nation to offer a complete sequence of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in the field of history. Upon admission, students will have the opportunity to apply for the consecutive master's and doctoral program, thus shortening the duration of their studies.

We Focus on Chinese history while also incorporate Taiwanese and world history. Our curriculum includes courses on diverse social and cultural history, aligning with the realities of contemporary society.
We respond to the current trends by not only providing a solid foundation in historical knowledge basis but also combine with practical historical skills to enhance employability. Our education aims to cultivate students' "historical virtues, historical consciousness, and historical judgment." We also encourage interdisciplinary learning and the integration of various fields of knowledge.
The learning characteristics are as follows:
  1. The complete educational structure of our department from undergraduate to doctoral programs is well established. It ensures students with specific needs for further learning.
  2. To integrate practical courses into our curriculum and create favorable environment for “Maker Education.”
  3. To generate a balanced learning system both on Foundational and Applied History.
  4. To encourage the Anchored Cross-Disciplinary Learning.

Course Highlights 課程重點

The required courses for the major include:

  1. Historiography
  2. General Chinese History
  3. General World History
  4. General Taiwan History
  5. Historical Methods
  6. History of Chinese Historiography
  7. History of Western Historiography
  8. Selected Readings in Western History
The major selective groups are as follows, with a minimum credit requirement for each cluster:
  1. Chinese History Cluster (minimum of 12 credits)
  2. Taiwanese History Cluster (minimum of 4 credits)
  3. World History Cluster (minimum of 6 credits)
  4. Art Creativity and Applied History Cluster (minimum of 8 credits)
To graduate, students must fulfill the minimum credit requirements for their chosen major and selective clusters according to the regulations set by the department.

Future 未來發展

  1. Teaching: We encourage students to pursue educational programs, leading to careers as history teachers in junior and senior high schools after graduation.
  2. Research: We provide instruction to students who expect for further studies in history and related disciplines at the graduate level. Many of our undergraduates have successfully entered various distinguished gradual schools and research institutes.
  3. Local Cultural and Historical Work: Students can apply their historical knowledge in diverse activities in terms with regional cultural and historical data collection, text compilation, preservation of cultural heritage, and promoting knowledge dissemination.
  4. Related choices: We promote students to pursue double degrees and minors, and emphasize their English ability. We also bolster students with capabilities in communication, teamwork, and sense of responsibility. It helps students be well-prepared for their career choices beyond history studies. It proves that many our graduates have received high praise in various related industries.

Scholarships 獎學金

  1. Hwa-Kang Scholarship: The top three students in each class are eligible to apply for this scholarship, with a maximum amount of 8,000 NTD.
  2. Outstanding Learning Financial Aid: Every year, our department provides financial aid to excellent but financially disadvantaged students based on the amount of funds raised, ensuring they can pursue their studies without worries.
  3. Mrs. Hui-Nian Wu's Financial Aid for Economically Disadvantaged Students: Each disadvantaged student receives $20,000 NT per semester (a total of $160,000 NT with eight semesters over four years) Additionally, relief financial aid is available for individual cases of students facing emergencies or short-term family financial difficulties.
  4. Starting from the 113th academic year, the Department of History provides the "Mrs. Chen Mian Wu’s Freshman Entrance Scholarship," valued at $50,000 NT. All enrolled freshmen are eligible to apply.

Cooperation Project 實習與產學合作

Our department collaborates with the university library to manage the Yan Xishan Residence in Taipei City, providing an excellent venue for students to engage in practical learning and internship opportunities.
In the future, we plan to arrange internships for students at other cultural choices, such as the Chungshan Building and Caoshan Vacation Palace. This enables our students a chance to gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of cultural heritage and historical preservation.
