The Department was established in August 1958. It was established for two purposes. First, because mathematics is the foundation of all sciences, engineering and so on are closely related to mathematics. Second, due to the budding of computer science, the development of computer science theory and practice is closely related to applied mathematics. At that time, the Department of Applied Mathematics was established in order to cooperate with the country's policy of cultivating scientific and technological talents, and to combine theory and practice to bring out the effectiveness of basic science.
With the changes of the times, Taiwan's social structure has experienced a pattern of declining birthrates. The enrollment of colleges and universities will face the impact of declining birthrates for ten consecutive years starting from the 108 academic year. Therefore, the department rethinks the goals and strategies of education in order to enhance the overall image and key features. By establishing a multi-adaptive admission mechanism, it adjusts the response strategies of each admission channel in a timely manner, assists outstanding students from social disadvantages to study, and implements diversity. In addition to continuing to expand the source of new students, in recent years, we have actively held department (institution) and admissions fairs, and also held lectures by workplace mentors and company visits from time to time.
“Big Data” have become the focus of market attention in recent years. When facing the impact of declining birth rate, the data system will gradually transform to "data analysis" as the core of the system's future development. The curriculum is divided into three groups: (1) Applied Mathematics, (2) Statistical Science and (3) Computer Science.
Theoretical courses and practical courses are equally emphasized. The goal of department is to cultivate "interdisciplinary talents with mathematical foundations".
Theory and practice are both emphasized, with the goal of cultivating "interdisciplinary talents with mathematical foundations". Currently, three study groups are planned; (1) Applied Mathematics (2) Big Data (3) AI.
The core courses are Calculus、 Advanced Calculus(I) 、Linear Algebra、 Probability and Statistics.
(1) Applied Mathematics courses includes Advanced Calculus (II)、Numerical Analysis、Discrete Mathematics、Differential Equations、Algebra、Complex Analysis、Vector Analysis、Geometry and Graph Theory.
(2)Big Data courses includes Sampling Research、Regression Analysis、Data Mining、Multivariate Analysis、SPSS 、Applications of R-software and Time Series Analysis.
(3) AI courses includes Internet of Things、Python Programming、Operating Systems、Database Practice、Scientific Computing Software Package、Information Security and Cryptography.
Gradually transform into "data analysis" as the core of the future development of the department. Department goal is to train students to have the ability to discover, analyze and solve problems.
There are many kinds of scholarship in department of applied mathematics, such as:
In each academic year, in addition to arranging courses taught by industry teachers, company visits and workplace instructor lectures are also organized to provide students with many inter-industry consultations and seamlessly integrate with industry work.
