The Dept. of Landscape Architecture was called “The Dept. of Landscape and Gardening”, authorized by the Ministry of Education and established in 1981. It belonged to the College of Agriculture and was the first undergraduate program in Taiwan that promote landscape and architecture education, and nurture professionals in this field.
In order to make landscape development known to the public, categorized by one of the specialized domains, met the needs of professional trends and practical purposes so that students can work as professionals and practice what they learn, the name was changed to—The Dept. of Landscape Architecture in 1994, and the graduate institute began its enrollment in the year 2002. We have enrolled for 42 years, and each class for a year until now. Under the efforts of the first, second chairman, Dr. 吳梓 , Dr. 董美貞 and the present dean Dr. 郭瓊瑩 , we have fostered about 3000 students, working in various academic, administrative institutions and practice offices. With the collaboration of all of our faculty members and students, our department is doing better and better, and establishing higher academic prestige.
Due to the current environmental condition and the consideration of the need of the professional market as a whole in Taiwan, there is tremendous need for the experts with substantial basis in the field of environmental design, among whom savants with special proficiency in city landscape, leisure recreation, community development, public green land, and the design of open space system are mostly desired.
So, the current teaching guideline of the department of landscape takes environmental design as the core. With intersecting courses, students may, on the basis of environmental resources, be trained to attain the ability in doing research in, analyzing, designing, and integrating fields with different functions, spatial sequences, and goals. Under the instruction of professional teachers, students will be instilled with both knowledge and skills, with some further instructions in lifetime education.
To fit the policy of the general courses in schools, the emphasis of curriculum design of the department of landscape is laid, in the first school year, on basic science, environmental lifestyle, painting skills, and the construction and inspiration of some basic ideas. In the second school year, the emphasis is put, in addition to some basic training on thinking and designing, on learning every single environmental resources and landscape units. In the third school year, we emphasize on the application and training of environmental designing method, which means that students will be taught to make analysis, induction, evaluation, and integration logically. Also, the variation of spatial measurement will be incorporated to enhance students' ability in handling the need of multiple functions and different goals, as well as the relationship between human beings and the environment. In the fourth school year, students are particularly asked to integrate their professional knowledge and skills, to manage environmental resources, and, for the coming graduates, to have a clear and correct understanding of their specialized career.
Graduates from the department of landscape may have multiple channels through their careers and chances for further researches. In the previous years, several graduates went abroad to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan for further studies. After they got their master or doctoral degrees, they came back to their own schools to teach, or to have their own businesses. In the recent years, due to the increasing establishment of related graduate schools in Taiwan and the growing number ofresearches, graduates from the department may enter some privately-owned company of designing and counseling, or construction companies.
